A letter to the editor of a newspaper!

Dear Editor,

I am writing regarding an article I read in your newspaper about pop music. The writer stated that pop music is becoming uninteresting and pop stars only like making money. Personally, I agree with that opinion.

Some groups, like Smashed, for example, only want to be popular in the world without making any effort. Their lead singer has an awful voice and the musicians do not play their instruments properly.

In addition to that, some singers that do not belong to groups, such as Lady Gaga, want to be famous instead of being creative. Lady Gaga uses the computer to make her voice sound nice, but actually, she is not talented at all. She only cares about her public image, like what to wear when she makes her next appearance.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that artists nowadays care about what other people think of them instead of trying to be successful in good ways.

Yours faithfully,

Athanasia Tournaki

Review of a restaurant!

La notte

La notte is a famous pizzeria near the port of Heraklio. It overlooks to the fort named Koule. It's very easy to get to and there's a parking space nearby.

La notte has a cosy, friendly atmosphere. The restaurant is modern and stylish and it it well decorated. The owners and the staff are very cheerful and welcoming. They're always ready to serve you.

The food there is really tasty. There are a lot of choices. There is an extremely wide variety of pizzas with different toppings. There are also some pasta dishes, different kinds of salads and a range of desserts. The food quality is perfect. All the dishes are made from fresh local ingredients.

I would thoroughly recommend La notte to everyone because the prices are reasonable and the food is fantastic. Well done to the owners for doing such great work!

Save the planet!

Global Warming

The problem

The atmosphere consists of many different layers. One of them is the ozone layer which protects the Earth from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. However, because of the pollution there is a big hole in this layer. So, we have a rise of the temperature. Apart from that, gases which come from factory chimneys, cars and from burning fossil fuels are also part of the problem. As a result, the ice in both Poles melts and the sea level rises. There are lots of serious floods in towns and cities on the coast. Moreover, some species will become extinct because of the climate changes. In addition to this, more lands will dry and there will be less food in the world.

The cause

The cause of this problem is the gases that people send to the atmosphere. There are: carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), methane and nitrous oxide. Carbon dioxide is the most important gas that causes the half of the problem. It comes from the burning of the rainforest trees and fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil). Chlorofluorocarbons are in aerosols (spray cans, air conditioners), refrigerators (the CFCs are in the liquids which keep fridges cold) and plastic boxes (for hamburgers, pizzas, etc.). Methane and nitrous oxide come from fertilizers, cows' stomachs and rubbish.

The solution

We can't stop the global warming, but we can slow it down. There are several ways to do this: Fist, we should burn less fossil fuels. We must protect the rainforests and not cut them down. Furthermore, we can use natural energy which comes from the sun, the sea and the wind. Finally, we should stop using the CFCs and replace them with other chemicals which don't damage our planet.

A postcard from Antarctica

Dear Alithia,

Well, here I am in Antarctica! The journey here was amazing because before we reached Antarctica we visited several different islands. Although they were small compared to Antarctica, they had many sights to visit.

Yesterday, we went to the Paradise Harbour, one of the main attractions in Antarctica. To see this sight you have to take another boat and not your cruise ship in order to explore it. The icebergs in this area were fantastic. After our long exhausting trip, that was the best place to relax. It was definitely worth visiting Paradise Harbour.

Tomorrow, we're going to the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. This trip will be the experience of a lifetime. Scientists say that at the Dry Valleys there's no snow and no ice. Also, it hasn't rained for over two million years. That's incredible! I'm very curious to see them!

Wish you were here!
See you soon!
Lots of love,
Christina

A dialogue between two girls

Mary: Hi. I'm Mary. What's your name?
Christina: My name is Christina. Are you a new member of this camp?
Mary: Yes, I am. Well, where do you come from?
Christina: I come from Greece. What about you?
Mary: I was born in Spain but I have been living in London since I was five. You? Where do you live?
Christina: I live in Greece and specifically in Crete.
Mary: Are you from a large family?
Christina: Not really. There are only four of us-me my parents and ma grandma. Do you have any pets?
Mary: No, I don't, but I'd like to have one. My favourite pet is the dog. However, at home, I'd like to have a fish. What do you do in your free time? Do you like sports?
Christina: I meet my friends and we play different games together like Cluedo, Monopoly, Jenga or cards. Sometimes my little sister and I sing and dance in order to have a break from our homework. Oh, I'm mad about swimming. Moreover, I'm keen on playing volleyball and table-tennis. I love sports. What's your favourite subject?
Mary: My favourite subject is English. Learning English is fun and in this way you can communicate with other people from different countries.
Christina: You're right. OK, would you like to walk with me for a while, before the next activity starts?
Mary: Yes, of course. Let's go!

Writing to a newspaper

Dear Editor,

I am writing with regards to an article about pop music which I read in your last newspaper. The writer stated that nowadays there are no interesting bands and most singers try to become famous without making good music. Personally, I totally agree.

First of all, in my opinion Vegas is one of those untalented groups. They have taken off because the band they formed is based on the music they get from computers. So, in this way they bring out their songs vary quickly.

In addition, Avril Lavigne cares only about her public image. She always wears strange clothes, because she wants to attract everybody's attention. Furthermore, she is more interested in making money than producing good music. Moreover, she steals different songs from other singers and presents them as her own.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that several pop stars have got nice voices and talent to produce their songs, but they do not want to be creative and make the best of it.

Yours faithfully,
Christina Mavradonaki

A review of a pizzeria

Delicia

Delicia is a new pizzeria that opened around a month ago. It is near the harbour of Heraklion and it overlooks the sea. It's very easy to get there because it's opposite Astoria hotel and right next to the park. There is a huge parking space outside the pizzeria so you don't have to worry about parking.

There is a really friendly and cosy atmosphere as soon as you enter. There's Italian style decoration and all the furniture is fashionable. The staff and especially the owners are very friendly, cheerful and polite. Moreover, the service is really quick. What I didn't like was the loud music.

The food is delicious and of very good quality. There is a variety of pizzas and lots of different toppings. There are also pasta dishes and salads. For dessert you can have ice cream, souffle or crepes.

I would definitely recommend this pizzeria to all my friends because the prices are reasonable, the food is really tasty and the place is great. So, it's worth visiting it.

Antarctica!

Antarctica

Antarctica
is Earth's southernmost continent. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the southern hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.25 square
kilometres, it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice.

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent. It is considered a desert. The temperature in Antarctica can reach up to -70°C . Th
ere are no permanent human residents. The only people remaining on the continent are 1,000 scientists . In the summer, it only gets dark for about 4 hours, although in the winter it's dark for 24 hours a day.

Only cold-adapted organisms survive in Antarctica, including many types of algae, animals (for example mites, nematodes, penguins and seals), bacteria, fungi, plants, and protista. Vegetation, where it occurs, is tundra.

Antarctica is becoming a popular tourist attraction. Several companies offer cruises to the continent- but only in the summer. There are a lot f things to see there. The sight of millions of penguins on Zavodovski Island is spectacular and the Dry Valleys, where there is no snow and no ice are unique. It hasn't rained there for over 2 million years, The icebergs on Paradise Harbour are also known, because the sight of them is magnificent.

Global Warming

Global warming

The problem:

Global warming is when the temperature of the Earth rises. It happens when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun in the atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants.

The cause:

Many things cause global warming. One of them is electrical pollution. It causes pollution in many ways. In most cases, fossil fuels like oil and petroleum are burned to create electricity. Many of the chemicals that pollute the air, water, and land) are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned. These chemicals are called greenhouse gases. Some of them can cause death. Cars, buses, and trucks are also responsible for dangerous chemicals let into the air.

The solution:

One thing we can do to prevent Global warming is carpooling. Carpooling is driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. This helps decreasing the amount of harmful gases put into the air

Another thing we should do is being more careful about leaving things turned on like televisions, computers, and lights. We must spend outdoors without using the television or the computer. This will help our planet a lot.

We could also use public transport or trying to walk or ride our bikes to work or school. Planting trees and recycling would also help. When we recycle, less rubbish goes to landfills, so less rubbish gets burned. As a result, there are fewer greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere. We should watch what we buy, too. Some products contain chemicals that can cause serious damage to the Earth.

Witness a crime

Dear Alithia,

How are things? Thanks for your letter. I'm glad you're doing well. I hope everything is fine.

Well, two weeks ago, I was a witness to a mugging! While I was returning from my English school, I saw a lady crossing the main road. She was middle-aged, she had wrinkles and she was holding a bag. At the same time, I saw a young man around thirty who was behind her. He was wearing casual clothes and he was an ordinary man.

Suddenly, the young man tried to grab the lady's bag and she started screaming "Help! Help!" He pushed her and she fell down. At that moment, I panicked and I was shocked. I didn't know what to do. So, I decided to ask for help. I went to a nearby supermarket and all the assistants and the customers ran out to help the lady. Luckily, she wasn't seriously hurt. Later, we called an ambulance which took her to hospital. A policeman who was walking around the area heard the lady and caught the thief.

I was really scared because of this experience and I hope there won't be any other similar crimes. Anyway, write soon and give me everyone's news.

Best wishes,

Christina

A letter about a crime!

Dear Eve,

Thank you for your letter. I was very glad to hear you’re fine.

In my last letter, I mentioned that there was a crime wave in my area. Well, some days later, I saw a mugging! I was returning home from my friend’s house, when I noticed a strange man behind me. He was about nineteen years old.

Suddenly, I saw him attacking a 50-year-old woman who was walking on the other side of the street. He tried to take her purse! The woman started screaming, but I couldn’t do anything. I was shocked. Luckily, a police officer heard the woman screaming, came to see what happened and arrested the man. It was so frightening and I was very scared!

It must be very exciting to be a police officer, but I wouldn’t like to be one when I grow up. It must be very dangerous… What do you think? Write soon!

Love,

Nassia

My favourite singer

Avril Lavigne

Avril Ramona Lavigne was born 27th September 1984 is a Canadian singer-songwriter, fashion designer, actress, and philanthropist. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, but she grew up in a small town, Napanee.
Her first album, Let Go, made her the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the UK. By 2009, over 16 million copies of her album had been sold worldwide. Her single, "Complicated", was on the top of the charts in many countries around the world, as did the album Let Go. In 2004, she brought out her second album, Under My Skin. It sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. The Best Damn Thing, Lavigne’s third album, was released in 2007. After the release of "Girlfriend", she has scored a total of five No. 1 singles worldwide, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm with You", "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend". With more than 30 million copies of her albums sold worldwide, she is currently one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S. Her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby, was released in March 2011. Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, she began working on her fifth album.
Avril Lavigne didn’t only record music, she started acting and designing clothes and perfumes. She voiced a character in the animated film, Over the Hedge, in 2006. That same year, she made her on-screen feature film debut in Fast Food Nation. In 2008, she introduced her clothing line, Abbey Dawn, and in 2009, she released her first perfume, Black Star, which was followed by her second perfume, Forbidden Rose, in 2010. In July 2006, Avril married her boyfriend of two years, Deryck Whibley, lead singer and guitarist for Sum 41. The marriage lasted a little over three years, and in October 2009, she filed for divorce. Whibley and Avril continued to work together, with Whibley producing her fourth album, as well as Lavigne's single, "Alice", written for Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland.

Avril Lavigne is my favourite singer. I love her voice and I believe she has a unique sense of style. She’s very talented and so pretty! Her songs are fantastic, too! I admire her and I look up to her.
